Leafs fall to Oil in Winter
The Oilers and Leafs travelled back to central Canada to finish off their series. After a tight finish and a tough battle the trash talk was evident as the Ryan Smyth trade was used as salt to try and throw off the Oilers. It seemed to fire up some of the Oilers especially the defacto home town favourite Lupul who wired a shot past Raycroft early in the 1st. Then in a move not seen since the ’86 playoffs, an unnamed Leaf pulled a Steve Smith and fired a pass off the pads of a stunned Grant … err I mean Andrew Raycroft to give the Oilers a 2-0 lead and smiling Sean Horcoff credit for the goal.
The second period started no better for the Leafs as Petr Sykora finished off a nice passing play top shelf over the blocker “I fooled everybody, including myself” Shrugged Petr “ … I was aiming low glove side”. The Leafs were able to get some flow back as Captain Sundin fired home a bullet past the Oiler’s netminder early in the third but the momentum was short lived as Petr Sykora scored his second of the game to put the game away. Despite some close calls on both sides, that is how the game ended.
