Devils Create Miracle To Win In OT
The New Jersey Devils were able to force the split at home and not be forced to go on the road in an 0-2 hole in this season's GUGgie Cup Finals. Those in attendance were witness to a miracle as the Devils scored three unanswered goals and watched their team Captain shake off an injury.
In the first there were no fireworks like Game 1 as both teams played a tight checking game. No one was a serious threat to score and the shot totals were about 5 to 4 in favor of Dallas.
Early in the second period, Lehtinen was able to get behind the Devils defense and from a bad angle put a one timer on net that got behind All Star goaltender Martin Brodeur. Fans sensed the game would open up, however it was still a defensive battle as shots were now 9 to 8 in favor of Dallas.
Brendan Morrow was able to find the scoresheet early in the third period and put the visitors up by the most dangerous lead in hockey, 2-0. The Devils would keep pounding and pounding, and thought they would crack the scoresheet when Scott Gomez had Marty Turco out of position. Gomez lined up a one timer and had the entire ocean to hit, but instead shot it back into the out of place goalie. As time was winding down in the third, Jamie Langenbrunner went five hole on a one timer from the lower left faceoff circle to bring some life to Continental Airlines Arena. Just a minute later, Brian Gionta was out in front of the crease all alone and able to bury another one timer in the upper corner to shell shock the Stars. The Devils would nearly take the lead off a weak wristshot that clanged off the post and harmlessly caromed into the corner. With New Jersey streaking, Dallas found a way to change momentum...hurt their captain. Patrik Elias was the victim of a hipcheck at the blueline, and rolled around on the ice writhing in pain. Before trainers escorted him to the locker room, he took one look at Turco and muttered "I'll be back". The final horn sounded and we were headed to overtime.
While in the locker room, OldTimeHockey found some magic spray to help what is being called a lower body injury. Team trainers applied the spray and Patrik Elias was better than ever. The return of the Captain brought the home fans to their feet. The Devils controlled the openning faceoff amongst the euphoria and nearly scored. In end to end action, Dallas marched down the ice and almost had one themselves, but Brodeur stood tall. On the ensuing breakout, they hit Patrik Elias with a headman pass and after some stickwork at the blueline, unleashed a slapper from the top faceoff circle into the far upper corner of the net for the game winner. The team was thankful their captain found the courage to go back out on the ice and are looking forward to going on the road to try and reclaim the home ice advantage they worked all season long to secure.
