Rnd 2 Gm 1, San Jose 1 @ New Jersey 2

Devils Grind Out Home Win

The New Jersey Devils looking to turn things around from a road team dominated first round eeeked out a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks to protect the home ice advantage they worked all season long to secure.

After the National Anthem got the crowd pumped, it was the road team that would draw first blood with a nifty give and go from Marleau to Milan Michalek for a backdoor goal and a 1-0 lead 8:06 into the first period. San Jose would continue on the attack, however the Devils defense was able to lay some big hits to help protect goaltender Martin Brodeur.

At the start of the second period, Scott Gomez came over the blue line and painted the upper right corner with a laser slapshot that clocked in at 104 mph to tie the game at 1. Both goaltenders would stand tall for the remainder of the period, preventing any sort of rebounds in front of their nets.

In the third period, it looked like San Jose had all but won on another 2 on 1 in the final minute of the game, however the shot missed the net. Brian Rafalski quickly scooped up the puck and skated up ice where he was able to draw two defenders and still manage to hit the tape of a streaking Brian Gionta. Gionta had Toskala at his mercy, and with the open net staring at him, he lost balance and was unable to get the shot off. Quickly sensing the opportunity, team captain Patrik Elias was able to pounce on the puck and put it in the open net with just 38 seconds remaining in the game. With the crowd worked up into a frenzy, it was the Sharks who pushed forward to tie the game, however, the home team would hold on for a 2-1 victory.

Game 2 is scheduled immediately after the team planes can touch down in San Jose. The Sharks will be looking for blood to even the series and prove that they are better than the #7 seed they received from the end of the regular season.
