Playoff Round 1 - Game 1

Chicago @ New Jersey

Blackhawks Stun Devils to take series lead

Chicago 5 New Jersey 1

The Chicago Blackhawks jumped out to a three goal first period lead against theshellshocked New Jersey Devils in Continental Airlines Arena last night, then scored again in the second before Patrik Elias managed to pull one back going into the third, then completed the rout with a third period marker following a rare mistake from Martin Brodeur right at the end of the game.

Martin Lapointe scored his first goal of the season with a neat deke to open the scoring and this was followed quickly by Martin Havlat beating Brodeur short side before Tuomo Ruutu completed a stunning first period for the Hawks against the shellshocked Devils.

The Hawks extended the lead in the second when Michal Handzus made it four unanswered goals before the Devils finally woke up and Elias pulled one back before the end of the period.

The Devils finally started getting their game together and put some good shots on Khabibulin and got a powerplay towards the end of the game, but Havlat scored a shorty when Brodeur passed it to White when slightly out of his goal. White passed it straight to a grateful Martin Havlat who scored to complete the scoring with under a minute remaining.

So a big shock at the start of the playoffs with the eighth seed taking the first game on the road, but this reporter predicts the Devils will look like a different outfit when the teams travel to Chicago for game two.
