New Jersey 2 @ Boston 1
New Jersey Finishes Season Strong
The New Jersey Devils completed their season on a high note, beating the Boston Bruins on the road by a score of 2-1 to move one step closer to the number one seed in the playoffs.
In a tightly contested battle, "Little" Brian Gionta was up to his old tricks, scoring off a 2 on 1 backdoor play. Patrik Elias waited until the last possible second to feather a pass to Gionta, who was able to squeeze the puck between Tim Thomas' leg and the near goalpost at 14:45 of the Second Period.
It appeared the Devils may hold on to the 1-0 victory, however Shean Donovan ended Brodeur's shutout bid on a weird play which started with a beautiful stickhandling move on a partial breakaway that lead to a shot that cleanly beat the goaltender, however defenseman Johnny Oduya was in the crease and had the puck slam off his shinpad and carom into the net at 11:57 of the Third Period.
As time was winding down, Coach Cadillac Zach was still philosophising about his team's late breakdown in the previous game and how he must guard against another such letdown. However team captain Patrik Elias had other plans as he took the Devils on his shoulders and skated in on a partial breakaway. With a deke to the right, then to the left, he slid the puck on the ice five hole for the game winner with 28 seconds left in the game.
It was announced after the game that the home and home series between the New Jersey Devils and Montreal Canadiens would be indefinitely postponed due to the flu epidemic going through the Habs locker room.
Good luck on your push to the playoffs Zach.
