GAME 1 Edmonton 4 @ Vancouver 3 (F)
Oilers Slip Past Canucks in Dying Minute
Vancouver BC
Canadian Press
The first game of the playoffs for these two western rivals began tentatively as both teams made space with the puck a premium and both goalies made some solid saves early. At the middle portion of the first period, the Oilers took an elbowing penalty and the Canucks made them pay as Henrick Sedin finished off a scrambled play at 13:49. Less then 2 minutes later, the Oil were in penalty trouble again but counter attacked to create a two on one with Ryan Smyth finishing off a great pass from Horcoff to bury it past Luongo at 18:36. From then on the referees buried their whistles and "Let the boys play".
The second started quickly for the Canucks as the star of the day, Henrick Sedin finished off a nice move in tight and all alone to put the Canucks up 2-1 just 45 seconds in. Just a minute later, Mattias Ohlund put a point shot past Rollson who seemed visibly upset over letting that one in, putting his team down 3-1. Not to be undone, the Oilers own #2 took a shot off a Jarrett Stoll facoff win 5 minutes later to put the Oilers within one. Luongo was shaking his head on that as the hockey gods evened up the "less then stellar goals". The rest of the 2nd period and most of the third was tight checking and filled with a few great saves as both goalies tried to make up for their bad games.
With just about two minutes left in the third period, the Oilers started to put the pressure on the Canucks in their zone. It seemed to be a lost cause as every attempt was turned back by either the defense or Roberto Luongo. But with puck deep in the zone and caoch Moe yelling for defensive zone coverage, captain Jason Smith took the puck and blasted a rocket slap shot off the post and in, tying the game at 2-2 at 19:24 of the third.
The stunned crowd and a still slightly angry coach Moe had just moved on and were talking OT when the Oilers took the puck and Jofrey Lupul was able to feed Shawn Horcoff down low to score the winner with just 27 seconds left putting an end to a well fought victory. Horcoff was heard later saying " I am not sure why the coach is on me, sure I missed some opportunities but I did get the game winner and an assist ... and I have a feeling I'll do something at home for game 2. I guess he just wants more of me ..."
