Toronto 3 @ Carolina 2 (OT)

Leafs sweep season series in OT thriller

The Leafs flew in to Raleigh immediately following their game Wednesday night to play the 2nd game of a doubleheader. The Leafs could be heard grumbling on the plane about what the NHL was thinking, scheduling a home and home series on the same night.

Andrew Raycroft started again for Toronto against Cam Ward in the Hurricanes goal. After being shut out in the 1st game, Carolina started fast and were rewarded with an early goal by Walker, giving the Canes a 1-0 lead.

The Leafs put pressure on Carolina but were stopped again and again by Cam Ward, and the 1st period ended with Carolina up by 1. The Leafs came out strong again in the 2nd and finally came through, Mats Sundin sliding an Alex Steen rebound underneath Cam Ward to tie the game at 1-1.

The third began with both teams fighting for every inch of ice, with both goaltenders making glorious stops to keep the game tied. With 4 minutes to play Darcy Tucker was able to slide a Canes giveaway underneath Ward's pad to give the Leafs a 2-1 lead and it looked like the game was over. However, Carolina phenom Eric Staal had something to say about it, tying the game with little under 2 minutes to play and sending the Raleigh crowd into hysterics.

Overtime was a tense affair, and ended in heartbreak for Carolina and veteran defenceman Bret Hedican. After Jeff O'Neill shoveled a shot towards goalie Cam Ward, Hedican fired the rebound into the far side to give the Leafs a 3-2 overtime win.
