Leafs and Senators face off in Battle of Ontario

There's always a great atmosphere in the stands when the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators face off, and Thursday night was no different. The Leafs came in to the Scotiabank Place reeling after getting only one of a possible four points against the surging New Jersey Devils. After a poor performance against the Devils, coach Menace1076 showed confidence in Andrew Raycroft by starting him against the powerful Senators at home, where they are a force. The young Leaf netminder did not disappoint the first year coach.

The game started out quick as usual, both teams getting great chances and the goalies coming up huge, Martin Gerber making consecutive stops on Darcy Tucker and Mats Sundin early on. The first was goalless, with Toronto outshooting Ottawa 8-4.

The Leafs came out strong in the second and were rewarded early, Alex Steen took a pass in front from Matt Stajan and beat Gerber glove side to give the Leafs a 1-0 lead and driving the Leaf faithful in Ottawa bonkers. Coach Menace's squad tightened the screws after taking the lead, frustrating the lethal Senator snipers into taking a couple penalties. It was on one of these power plays in the third that Jeff O'Neill put the game away, Mats Sundin and Bryan McCabe picked up the assists.

Ottawa had great chances in the last 5 minutes but couldn't beat the post, hitting it twice behind Raycroft. The Leafs took the first game of the home and home 2-0.
