New Jersey 5 - Toronto 2
New Jersey Extends 11 Game Win Streak
The New Jersey Devils continued their strong play with a convincing 5-2 victory in Toronto last night. The inaugural GUGHL 07 season has been a year of streaks for the Devils as they openned the year with four straight victories, followed by a slump of three straight defeats. Looking to make a push for the playoffs, New Jersey has climbed in the standings at an alarming rate on the strength of an eleven game winning streak.
Once the Canadian and US national anthems were finished, Coach OldTimeHockey prophesized that this would be a high scoring affair contrary to the defensive show put on previously. The first period alone would make him look like a genius as his team was able to rattle off three straight goals at will. Still in a funk from letting in the game winner in overtime, Andrew Raycroft inexplicately made the same mistake as he tried to move a freezable puck, but the pass found the stick of Scott Gomez for a 1-0 lead just 4:44 into the game. The announcers felt that this might lead to a big momentum change, and they were right as the floodgates openned in favor of the Devils. Sergei Brylin found the back of the net at 5:27 and Jamie Langenbrunner (who is quickly becoming a Leaf killer) followed suit at 6:11 to complete three goals in 1:27 span.
The intermission could not come soon enough as Coach Menace was ready to give his squad a tongue lashing. He told them to take it one shift at a time, and the persistance paid off with 6:55 remaining in the second period off a partial breakaway by Jeff O'Neill. O'Neill was able to thoroughly confuse Martin Brodeur with a couple of quick dekes and put a low shot to the goalie's stick side. Brodeur was still able to get a piece of the puck, but just after it crossed the goal line. Hoping to give Toronto new life, the fans were suddenly awake and cheering, however silence would prevail as the Devils Sergei Brylin found twine for his second goal of the game just two minutes fifty seconds later to restore the three goal lead.
The third period began and Toronto was doing everything in their power to bombard Brodeur, however the Devils defense was able to lay a body on anyone in a blue jersey coming into their defensive zone. Eventually Alexander Steen was able to get off a long shot that eluded Brodeur and brought the Leafs back to within two goals. Thoughts of a comeback would be squashed as the Leafs took a late penalty, and Zach Parise was able to notch a powerplay goal off a rebound to close out the scoring and provide the final margin.

Geez OTH! I'm glad I played you early in the season when Brodeur was off his game!
Critter, I can't blame Brodeur, you deserved to win those games (plus defense is only half the game, where was my offense?). I'll look get get revenge in the playoffs.
