New Jersey 3 - Chicago 1

Devils Will Not Be Denied

The New Jersey Devils rolled into the Windy City with all the confidence in the world as they continued their climb in the GUGHL standings riding an 11 game winning streak. The Devils would not be denied on this day as the streak was extended to 12 games.

Both teams offered little in the way of offense to start the game until Erik Rasmussen scored two goals 31 seconds apart to open up a 2-0 lead. Not content to rest on their laurels, In the second period, "Little" Brian Gionta almost extended the lead, however the puck clanged off the post and out of play for a faceoff deep in the Blackhaws zone. Scott Gomez was able to show his wizardry with a hockey stick and completely fool Nikolai Khabibulin for a three goal lead. Devils netminder Martin Brodeur played a strong game, however his shutout bid ended with 38 seconds remaining in the game when Mikael Holmqvist was able to showcase his own stickhandling and knock off the water bottle to crack the scoring column.
