New Jersey 2 - Carolina 1
Three In A Row For The Hometown Boys
The New Jersey Devils won for the third straight time to move past an idle Toronto Maple Leafs for second place. Much like the first game, neither team could find the back of the net in the first period. In the second, Andrew Ladd was able to snap a quick shot that easily eluded Martin Brodeur and ended his club record shutout streak of 154:26. A name we haven't reported in awhile, Scott Gomez, pulled the Devils even with a flukey goal with just over a minute remaining in the period. The third period was very tense as neither team wanted to make a mistake. The Devils would take the lead from the most unlikely source: the fourth line. Tough guy Cam Janssen parked himself right in front of Cam Ward's net, but got nervous and instead of shooting, passed it back to the point for a shot that went wide. The Devils recovered the rebound and worked it inside to Janssen again, whom got Ward to go down low off a fake shot. Janssen then proceeded to drop the puck to Dan Lacouture standing between the faceoff circles whom easily roofed it over the downed goaltender. Brodeur and the Devils defense were able to lock the gate and not allow an equalizer.
After the game, Cam Janssen was asked what was going through his mind when he had the puck on his stick twice in front of goal. He responded "I was totally nervous since everyone knows I'm a fighter with hands of stone. I don't think I've even scored at the pee wee level, so passing was the first thing I thought of. Thankfully I was able to spot Dan for the goal. I can't believe the goaltender actually thought I was going to shoot."
Good tight series Shucker!
