New Jersey Devils 2 - Vancouver Canucks 1
Devils win in home opener
East Rutherford, NJ
-Associated Press
The New Jersey Devils kicked off their GUGHL 07 season off on the right foot by defeating the Vancouver Canucks by a score of 2-1. This will be the Devils 25th season in New Jersey, and all fans in attendance were given a replica 1982 opening night pennant. All concession stands in the arena participated in the event, rolling back their prices on all food (beer not included) to reflect prices in 1982, meaning fathers would not have to take out a second mortgage to feed their starving families.
The puck was dropped and both teams did battle. No scoring was recorded in the first period as both teams used it as a feeling out period. Early in the second period, Brian Gionta was able to find a streaking Patrik Elias down the center of the Canucks zone where Elias made one deke and let out a wrister that clanged off the post and in at 1:25. This flustered Vancouver as they took some undiciplined penalties and New Jersey was able to capitalize on a 5 on 3 powerplay. Sergei Brylin received a pass at the back door and while staring at an empty net slammed a shot off the near post, which caromed off the back leg of Roberto Luongo at 10:58. This woke up Vancouver as they were able to sustain pressure on Martin Brodeur and were able to crack his defense. Vancouver won a faceoff in the Devils zone, and Sean Brown let off a wrister from the point that hit Brodeur in the shoulder and trickled in with only 22 seconds left in the period. The Devils were fortunate to get to the intermission with a lead still intact. In the third period, the Devils would not sit back, constantly applying pressure to Luongo whom almost stole them the game. Late in the period Scott Gomez clanged a shot off the post that would have sealed the game.
Great game Moe! Good to meet you and I look forward to the rematch. Go grab another Duff.
