New Jersey Devils 2 - Tampa Bay Lightning 1
New Jersey Survives Scare
St. Pete Times Forum
Associated Press
New Jersey was able to keep their winning streak alive (which has since turned into a three game losing streak) to open the first EA GUGHL 07 season by skating past the Tampa Bay Lighting at the St. Pete Times Forum by a score of 2-1.
The puck was dropped and Tampa wasted little time in getting the puck in the hands of diminutive Martin St. Louis (how many Martin's are in this league anyways?) for a 1-0 lead just 1:53 into the contest. After the goal the game settled down, and neither team was able to generate a flow. The Devils John Madden was finally able to crack the scoreboard at 8:05 of the first period.
At intermission, the Lighting held a strange contest where a bunch of foam lightning bolts were dropped from the rafters and the contestant that was able to catch the most won free season tickets. The winner had 1 bolt in his hand as he tackled the other contestants before time ran out, causing everyone to drop their stash of bolts.
The players took to the ice and both goalies were able to hold their ground. New Jersey manager OldTimeHockey questioned the referees if that wasn't Nikolai Khabibulin in a Marc Denis sweater. The referees could not issue a delay of game penalty on the challenge because of the severe laughter that ensued.
The third period got into a flow of momentum changes with both teams applying ferocious pressure on the goaltenders.
Late in the period, early season hero and newly named captain Patrik Elias was able to slip one in the net with only 4:41 remaining in the contest. Tampa Bay was unable to get off a good chance and New Jersey was able to go home unscathed (for now).
