New Jersey 3 - Phoenix 2
Devils Survive "Famous" Comeback Attempts
The New Jersey Devils played host to the Phoenix Coyotes in what would be a strong defensive battle as evidenced by the shot total. The Devils would gain a 1-0 advantage off the stick of Brian Gionta at with 86 seconds remaining in the period. The lead would be shortlived as Ladislav Nagy would find a way to sneak one past a seemingly impenatrable Martin Brodeur just 41 seconds later. Nagy took a shot which was blocked and came directly back to him, but was able to quickly get off the rebound shot while Broduer was recovering from the initial block.
In the second period, "Little" Brian Gionta was back at it again, this time scoring off a play Coach Hailsux dubbed the "accidental drop pass." Patrik Elias found himself with the puck directly in front of Cujo's crease, however he was backchecked as he wound up to shoot, which left the puck in place for Gionta to come in and rip it past the stunned netminder.
Looking to add to the lead, Scott Gomez won a neutral zone faceoff which Paul Martin scooped up. Martin gained the blue line and let off a laser top shelf that sealed the game...or would it? Coach Hailsux had now gone from sip to chug of his magic elixir (beer) and with 33 seconds left in the game, Nick Boynton found the back of the net on a scramble. Hopes of a comeback via the famous Hailsux "rope-a-dope sneak attack" in the final minutes of the game were squashed when the Devils were able to win the faceoff and maintain possession to extend their winning streak in hopes of making a push for the playoffs.
