New Jersey 2 Edmonton 1

New Jersey Returns Home With A Victory

The New Jersey Devils coming off a successful road trip were able to keep the winning streak alive against the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday night. While returning to Newark Airport, Coach OldTimeHockey was able to find Scott Gomez's passport sitting in a recycling bin. Due to an unprecedented postal strike, which is also being supported by FedEx and UPS as well, Manager Lou Lamoriello had no choice but to send it to Vancouver via carrier pigeon, which meant the Devils would be without their star playmaker. This seemed to matter little as the Devils skated away with the much needed two points.

In the first period, the Devils came out like gangbusters, swarming Roloson and peppering him with shot after shot. Jay Pandolfo was finally able to solve him about 5 minutes into the period off a feed from John Madden. Then embarassment set in. Continental Airlines Arena management forgot to pay the electric bill, and the teams suffered through a power outage. After e-mails with the electric company, the teams decided to Paypal the money so they could continue. When power was restored, both teams agreed to begin the Second Period maintaining a 1-0 score.

The second period was a little sluggish at times as both teams would not allow a shot on net. The Devils Jamie Langenbrunner was finally able to stuff the biscuit in the basket for insurance. Late in the period, Edmonton took an undisciplined tripping penalty that seemed to work to their advantage. While on the power play, Brodeur wanted to keep the puck moving, but instead passed it out to an untouched Ryan Smith, and the Oiler was able to make the deposit in the empty net for a shorthanded goal and halving the deficit.

The third period, the Devils tried to make the perfect pass for a goal, and as is always the case they made one pass too many as the Edmonton defense stood tall. The only threat Edmonton posed was late in the period with under a minute remaining, they were able to get off a one timer that Brodeur snuffed out for the victory.

Thanks to poor scheduling, the Devils traveled back out West to visit Edmonton in a home and home. Luckily they would have the services of Scott Gomez as he doesn't have to cross any boarders.
