Friday the 13th Match Lives up To All the Superstition
Afer getting hammered by the young Penguins in their own barn, the Oilers needed to seek revenge in Pittsburgh on Friday the 13th. As posts rang and bounces bounced, weirdly ... all watching questioned wether they really entered the ... Twilight Zone.
It all started innocent enough in the first with a lot of close calls at both ends of the rink and several posts, especially for the Oilers Sean Horcoff. Before the end of the first though, the goose egg was broken when the Pens scored on what looked to be an easy save as Roloson went to grab the puck and missed. The weirdness and the second period started at pretty much the same time.
First, Fleury of the Pens decided he did not want to rob Horcoff of a goal and gave it back to him. Surprisingly, Horcoff missed the post and put it into the empty net. A few minutes later, the Pens were called for a penalty. After a couple more posts by Horcoff (including one were he had the open net after the whistle went) ... the Pens dumped the puck and Sergei Gonchar went chasing after it. An Oilers defencemen picked it up in the corner and tried a flip pass past the speeding Gonchar (who was essentially on the boards at the circle). Somehow the speedy defencemen knew to one time the shot with the shaft of his stick (between his hands) and the puck caromed of a stunned Roloson across the net and into the other corner 2-1 Pens.
After both teams watched the reply and laughed hysterically, play continued. Hemsky somehow scored the first nice goal finishing off a odd man rush on the same powerplay to tie the game proving that postitis was not completely contagious. The Oilers then scored 2 more goals (1 pretty, 1 not so much) interspersed with more posts by both teams. With just a few seconds left in the period the Pens scored again to get within one.
The third period was almost all posts with both sides contributing and both goalies somehow saving their own bacons. But the strangeness was not over. With under a minute left, and some heavy pressure, the Pens took a penalty. As the Oilers skated out on PP, it looked like a simple assignment... don't give up a short handed goal. But it was the Pens who looked like they were on the PP, hemming in the frustrated Oilers eventually getting the puck back to the point for a blast that was blocked. Sid the Kid, the Oiler killer in their last match picked up the puck and buried it with 25 seconds left. This game had to go into OT.
Oilers were still on the PP but could not muster much but more posts with the remaining time. Not to be outdone, several Pens did the same at the other end.
Finally, inspired by the threat of an endless shootout of posts, Stoll of the Oilers picked up the puck in the offensive zone and wired a shot top shelf to end the hell that was ... Friday the 13th, return of the Post!
