Ryan Smyth Hat Trick Leads Oilers over Avs

The Avalanche made the trek north for a Northwest battle with the Oilers. The Oilers started quickly again with Smyth continueing his hot play with a goal early in the first period and that is how a tight first period ended with the Oiler up 1-0. Burnaby Joe Sakic made the Oilers pay early in the second as he was left all alone and he backhanded a shot past a stunned Roloson. The home team replied back as captain Jason Smith scored off a face off deep in the Avalanche zone. And this is where the laggies got going making it tough on both teams. But it seemed to help the Oilers more as Ryan Smyth scored again before the end of the second.

The third period was back and forth with stellar play by both goalies to keep the puck out including one accidental save by Roloson who kicked the puck out backwards as he spun around to find takingout a Ave at the same time. The Oiler's third line sealed the deal with just under 1 minute left with Ethan Moreau finishing off a nice passing play. With just 30 seconds left, Ryan Smyth scored his hat trick goal cleaning up the garbage in front of the Colorado net.
