Carolina Hurricanes 2 - Buffalo Sabres 1
A nailbiter of a game came down to the wire and closed with a deflating goal with only 38 seconds left.
All in all, it was a close match between two determined teams but again, Carolina struggled early on to win a faceoff draw. The scoring opened at 9:08 in the first with Buffalo's Campbell scoring on Ward with a floating wristshot that deflected to the top corner off of a sprawing Carolina defenseman. 7 minutes into the second period Ladd (CAR) made a charge to the net and banged away at the puck until it found its way in, through the legs of Miller.
For the next 23 minutes scoring ceased, but the action only intensified. As the clock wound down, both sides seemed to dread the thought of overtime as they played all-out aggressive, old-time hockey... big hits, long passes, blistering slapshots... anything to keep the game moving and the pace frantic. Unfortunately, in an effort to keep the play alive, Miller (BUF) having just made a routine save, fed a close range pass to a defenseman that deflected off of his skate and into the back of the net with a mere 38 seconds on the clock in regulation time.
