Canucks @ Blackhawks

Vancouver 3 Chicago 4 (SO)

Hawks Make it Four in a Row - Just!

The Blackhawks participated in their highest scoring game of the season yesteday at the United Center, and just about managed to claim the two points in a game notable for two incredible goals.

The Canucks were out to prove they could muster offense after a disappointing showing and that is exactly what they did jumping out to a one goal lead with Henrik Sedin marker early on. That was negated by a Radim Vrbata wrist shot from between the circles which went over Luongo's shoulder for a goal that he would definitely want back. The Canuck again took the lead in the second with the other Sedin twin one timing a goal from an excellent feed from Henrik on a two on one before the wackiness took over. The Hawks were pressuring the Vancouver net with Luongo stoning Ruutu, Vrbata and Havlat before he landed on the puck and instead of freezoing it he inexplicably threw the puck into Martin Havlat's chest right in front of the goal. The puck bounced off the Czech winger's chest and back through the legs of a still prone Luongo and into the net, with some debate as to whether Havlat actually got a touch on it with his stick or not.

Vrbata scored another, almost identical wrister on a power play in the third to give the Blackhawks the lead for the first time - which they held until the last minute when after huge pressure from the Canucks, the second of the night's strange goals went in. The Canuck's battered the Chicago net, but it wasn't until Michal Handzus got his stick on the puck that the Blackhawks were in real trouble. The Hawk center managed somehow to wrist a shot passed Khabibulin with forty two seconds left on the clock rather than clear the zone - which he maintained he was trying to do after the game.

So the scores were level, and after an overtime period which Vancouver dominated (outshooting the Hawks 6-1) but couldn't find the breakthrough, the fans saw the first shootout of the season featuring the Hawks. First up was Marcus Nasland who slipped it five hole only for Kahabibulin to reach behind him to secure the puck before it crossed the line, followed by Martin Havlat, who deked Luongo out of his pads only to hit the post and the crossbar as somehow the puck stayed out of the net. The next three shooters also drew blanks Daniel Sedin, Michal Handzus and Matt Cooke all missing before Finnish forward Tuomo Ruutu forced one in off Luongo's pads to claim the two points for the Hawks.

Vancouver 25
